How nice to see these tributes to Dame Joan Sutherland. She played a significant part in the revival of interest in baroque opera, not least because she could sing and decorate these showpieces in such bravura style.

She was perhaps at her best in the bel canto repertoire of the early nineteenth century. Tibute was paid to her at a recent Opera Rara event as 'the greatest bel canto singer of all time'.

She was certainly the greatest singer I have ever heard or ever expect to hear.
